NEWS > New Roku Hardware & OS Update On the Way

Roku Spring 2021 hardware

This week Roku announced a slate of new hardware arriving online and in in-store between now and June including:
  • NEW Roku Express 4K+ - With better, faster WiFi and support for 4K and HDR, this is a good option for first-time streamers or secondary TVs

  • NEW Roku Streambar Pro - A soundbar and streamer combined, this larger size Streambar will "upgrade any TV with cinematic sound and powerful streaming"

  • NEW Roku Voice Remote Pro - The first-ever rechargeable Roku remote that brings bells and whistles (like find your remote, programmable quick launch buttons, and private listening) previously only available with the Roku Ultra to most other Roku streamers and Smart TVs
A brand new Roku operating system update is also rolling out with some new features like Apple AirPlay 2, instant resume, and more.

So if you're planning to buy a Roku — or any streaming player — in the next few months, make sure to get the latest and greatest and not an older discontinued model.

Q&A > Is It Bad to Use USB Power For My Streaming Device?

Roku USB power

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Darrin who says, "I've been using the included USB cable to power my Roku stick for a long time but out of the blue I'm getting this message. Is the device going bad or is it my TV?"

Seeing an 'insufficient power' message like this isn't an indicator that Darrin's streaming stick or TV is on its last legs, just that his Roku isn't getting enough juice to perform optimally.

While most stick-style streamers allow you to power the device via your TV's USB ports instead of using a more traditional power brick, it's generally best to opt for the old-fashioned AC adapter.

Without enough power, your streaming stick could periodically lose connectivity with your network, crash, or even be 'bricked' if the power loss happens during a firmware update during which the unit can draw more power than the average TV's USB port puts out.

Have a question about cord cutting that you'd like answered? Send us a note and you may see your question in an upcoming issue of Cord Cutting This Week!

CANADIAN CORNER > Get 6 Months of Crave Free With Bell Phone Plan

Crave

If you're planning to upgrade your Bell cell phone or activate a new plan, you can get six months of Bell's Crave streaming service for free.

This deal isn't available to current Crave subscribers and is only for Crave's base plan which doesn't include add-ons like Stars or HBO Max but is certainly worth it if you're paying for the phone plan anyways.
