Happy Friday cord cutters!

This will be the last newsletter of 2020! We hope you have a safe and happy holiday season and we'll be back in your inboxes on January 8th, 2021.

But first, this week we're talking about two major détentes in the streaming platform wars.

Also: Q&A on 'powered' TV antennas, short cuts, must-see OTA TV, and more.

As always, if you know of someone who might need some insight or help with cutting the cord on cable or satellite, please forward our newsletter, or use the handy share buttons at the top of this email.

OK... now let's get to it!

NEWS> HBO Max Arrives on Roku, Apple TV App Coming to Android
HBO MAX on Roku
Just in time for the Christmas Day streaming premiere of Wonder Woman 1984, Roku and Warner Media have finally reached an agreement to carry the HBO Max app on the Roku platform. Shares of Roku were trading higher Thursday on the announcement.

Given Warner's plan to release its first-run movies like Wonder Woman on HBO Max, the lack of Roku support was a glaring omission for both sides. Perhaps losing ground in terms of user base and potential sales to competitors during the key Black Friday selling period were a factor for Roku.

The HBO Max app is available now on Roku and WhatToWatch has a tutorial on how to get the app onto your device.

In other platform news, Apple has struck a deal to bring its Apple TV app to the popular Chromecast with Google TV device in early 2021, with additional Android TV devices to follow.

So it seems the only major scuffle between streaming platforms and content providers is Peacock on Amazon Fire TV. Thankfully there's a workaround for that.

Q&A > Will My Powered TV Antenna Still Work If It Loses Power?
Antennas Direct amplified antenna

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Jay who asks, "Will my powered TV antenna still work if it loses power?"

Some Over-the-Air TV antennas include built-in or optional amplifiers like the Antennas Direct Clearstream FLEX shown above which can help lock in weaker signals for a clearer picture.

The downside of powered amplifiers is that if the power source fails, the unpowered circuits in the amplifier won't just reduce the signals coming from your antenna to your TV or DVR but instead will totally block them.

So if your amplified TV antenna stops working suddenly, check the power adapter connections and/or switch to powering it via your nearest wall outlet versus via your TV's USB port which can fail or provide too weak of a power source.

If that doesn't work and if your TV antenna's amplifier is detachable, removing it will allow your antenna to continue to pass signals to your TV, although at a weaker strength.

CANADIAN CORNER > BBC Canada Making Way for BBC Select
BBC Select

Reader Bill S. asked us about a way to watch BBC shows since Stack TV is discontinuing BBC Canada as of the end of the year.

It seems as though BBC Canada is being replaced by a new app/platform called BBC Select in both Canada and the US.

No pricing has been announced yet, but the service will be available in early 2021 so keep an eye out for more details.
