Happy Friday Cord Cutters!

This week we're looking at why streaming bundles with live TV keep going up in price and what cord cutters can do about it.

Also: Q&A on keeping your streaming accounts safe from hackers, short cuts, must-see OTA TV, and more.

As always, if you know of someone who might need some insight or help with cutting the cord on cable or satellite, please forward our newsletter, or use the handy share buttons at the top of this email.

OK... now let's get to it!

IN-DEPTH: Local Broadcast TV The Source of Pricing Pain

local broadcast channels money

Cord cutters who rely on cable-style streaming bundles that include both local broadcast and specialty channels are reeling from recent price hikes.

Despite rumors, YouTube TV is not raising prices (yet) although they are under the same financial pressure as other streaming providers.

As we noted earlier in a story about the demise of PlayStation Vue, any bundle that includes live, local broadcast TV — whether it's a streaming or traditional pay TV package — will continue to go up in price because of ballooning re-transmission consent fees.

Even if they'd like to offer smaller live packages — as Hulu parent company Disney has hinted at — they're hamstrung by current contracts.

The only way to avoid these constant price hikes is to avoid bloated streaming bundles altogether and watch your local channels with an Over-the-Air antenna. Perhaps this is one of the many reasons why antenna use is growing

Not sure how to get the content you want without an expensive live TV streaming service? A new cord cutting planning site called MyBundle.TV can help.

Q&A: Have Disney+ Accounts Been Hacked?

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

Today's question comes from Lori who says, "I saw something online this week about Disney+ accounts being hacked. Should I cancel to be safe? How can I protect my account?"

While there have been reports of some Disney+ account credentials for sale, it doesn't appear to be a result of a traditional 'hack'.

As cord cutting and internet security geek Phil at Cordcutters.com points out, we are our own worst enemies when it comes to online security.

When you re-use the same email and password for multiple online accounts and that data has been exposed in a previous leak or hack, evildoers can try those same credentials to hijack other services.

To stay safe online use a password manager service like LastPass, or a different password for each new thing you sign up for.

CANADIAN CORNER: Canadian Court Orders ISPs to Block Piracy Site

piracy

For the first time ever, a Canadian court has issued an order to all ISPs to block access to an IPTV streaming site.

Canada's major internet service providers also happen to be the country's major broadcasters and have been lobbying the CRTC to be allowed to do this for years. However, the CRTC rejected the concept which clearly goes against its stance on net neutrality.

So instead Bell, Rogers, and Videotron filed a lawsuit and although the same anti-net neutrality arguments were brought before the judge, all ISPs have been ordered to block the site within 15 days.
