NEWS > Growth in Over-the-Air Subchannels Continues

Twist Network Logo

Over-the-Air subchannels channels that share the broadcast frequency of a major network but carry different, often specialty programming  have been a bright spot for the broadcasting business over the last few years. Where ratings for cable and other channels are down, channels like MeTV, Bounce, and Cozi actually grew in viewership.

This is why broadcasters are continuing to invest in subchannels like the female-focused Twist which launched Monday in 83 markets across the US.

Also this week, the new ownership group behind This TV inked a deal to be carried by major ABC affiliates, and streaming channel Newsy announced it will start broadcasting Over-the-Air later this year.

Needless to say, if you use an antenna to watch TV make sure to run a fresh channel scan regularly. You never know what new channels might be available!

Q&A > Are There Downsides to Cord Cutting with Mobile Internet?

TMobile Home Internet

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Terra who says, "I've been looking at the new T-Mobile home internet but will it work for streaming TV and cord cutting? Are there any downsides?"

For those in semi-rural locations where broadband internet is unavailable, using 4/5G cellular gateways or hotspots is becoming more popular. This week T-Mobile opened their new home internet service, which offers unlimited plans with up to 100 Mbps speeds for a flat $60 fee, to 30 million households across the US.

Customers using the service during its extended trial report mostly positive experiences including streaming 4K video, but there are some caveats that cord cutters may want to consider. The service is currently incompatible with Hulu+ Live TV, and may provide incorrect geolocation data when using other streaming services that offer local channels.

T-Mobile's combo router/wireless gateway also doesn't allow you to use a separate router or mesh network via bridge mode and doesn't support port forwarding which can affect your use of services like Tablo Connect with Tablo OTA DVRs, online gaming, and home security.

Have a question about cord cutting that you'd like answered? Send us a note and you may see your question in an upcoming issue of Cord Cutting This Week!

Tubi

Free ad-supported video platforms are huge with cord cutters in the US, but the content is often sparse in Canada.
