DEALS: The Best Father's Day Deals on Cord Cutting Gear
One of the best times to buy cord cutting gear (or any tech gadget) is just before Father's Day. With the holiday coming up on Sunday, here's some of the can't miss deals we've seen:
Q&A: How Do I Load Apps Onto My Older Smart TV?
Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.
This week's question comes from Jim who says, "We signed up for Philo and are enjoying it on our newer Roku Smart TV in the living room, but there doesn't seem to be a Philo app on our older LG TV in the bedroom. How can I load the Philo app on it?"
At the moment, there is no Philo app available on LG Smart TVs. So even if Jim searches for it in the LG Content Store (which is the normal process for adding apps to LG Smart TVs) he won't be able to get it.
Why is that? In general, 'leanback' (aka TV-based) apps for newer streaming services like Philo tend to be released on major app platforms like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV first. These platforms are standardized and provide a fairly open and quick process for app approval and distribution.
Unfortunately, LG is one of several major television manufacturers (including Samsung and Vizio) with its own proprietary operating system and 'app store'.
This non-standard approach requires special custom apps to be developed followed by months of red tape for approval and distribution. Even then, it's LG that decides which apps get distributed to which TV models so if Philo eventually makes an LG app, it may not even get to Jim's TV.
Since Jim is familiar with Roku's interface, we'd recommend he purchase a Roku Streaming Stick+ or Roku Ultra to bypass the 'smarts' on his LG TV and enjoy Philo in the bedroom.

CANADIAN CORNER: Save $10 Off Amazon Fire TV Sticks
Canadians looking for a Father's Day deal can save $10 off the base model Amazon Fire TV stick.
Normally we'd recommend the 4K streaming stick or Amazon Fire TV Cube, but sadly there are no discounts to be had on those. Still, the base model is a decent (and cheap) way to get dad streaming his favorite shows.
