Today’s question comes from Annie who says, “I’m trying to decide between the 2-tuner and the 4-tuner Tablo. What’s the benefit of more tuners if I only have two TVs?”
In case you missed it, Tablo Total System packages and standalone Tablo devices now come in two different types: 2-tuner and 4-tuner.
Whether you have twelve televisions or just two like Annie, there are reasons why you might want to consider a Tablo with additional tuners.
The primary function of tuners is to decode the signal coming in from your over-the-air TV antenna. That means the more tuners your Tablo has, the more live TV channels you can watch and record at the same time.
Watching completed recordings does not require a tuner.
For example, with a two-tuner Tablo device, you can watch Jeopardy live while recording a sitcom on another channel. Or you can watch your favorite TV drama in the living room while your partner watches sports in the basement. Or, if you need to go out for the evening, you can record and watch both of your programs later.
Sports fans, larger families and folks who record shows frequently will likely want the flexibility that a 4-tuner Tablo device brings. With the ability to watch or record up to four programs at once, everyone can watch their favorite show as it airs or on their schedule.
Tuners are also used for archiving antenna TV recordings using onboard storage and generating fast-forward preview frames on completed recordings. If you use onboard storage or like to be able to visually seek through recordings shortly after they end, having extra tuners available is handy.
