Just over a year ago, we were ramping up to introduce Tablo to the world. We had a product name, a beta-ready product and a handful of assumptions about how people would use it. Back then, we guessed most users would watch Tablo content on tablets and on TVs via Roku or Apple TV... (And eventually this thing called Chromecast that was brand spankin' new...) We also made a web app to be used on computers.
But we never really thought people would regularly use their smartphone to watch TV programs from their Tablo and figured the web app would work quite well for most smartphone users.

Most of us became cord cutters in the first place because we were sick and tired of paying a lot of money for cable or satellite service and started looking for entertainment options that offered a better value.
Continue Reading...In a recent survey, 40% of Tablo users said that saving money was their primary reason for cutting the cord on cable. (The second most popular reason was that cable programming wasn’t worth the cost…)
Given the rising costs of maintaining access to those 300+ channels of reality shows and speciality programs you likely never watch, it’s not surprising people are looking for alternatives to cable TV. The average cost of a mid-range cable TV package is between $70-$100 a month. And that’s just for content, not the rental of hardware or extra fees your provider might charge.
Given that 47 of the top 50 shows are available via Over-the-Air broadcast networks, the cost vs. benefit analysis just doesn’t add up for most viewers.

At the Expo, we’ll be showing off the Tablo Over-the-Air DVR that you know and love as well as something new we’ve been tinkering with in the lab: cable card support within Tablo.
Cutting the cord isn’t just about watching what you want, when you want on whatever device you want, it’s also about reducing the amount of money you spend each month on entertainment. Most of us who’ve joined the cord cutting revolution did so out of frustration for paying on average $85 per month for cable or satellite subscriptions. This is why doing the math on total cost of ownership (TCO) on your cord-cutting setup is critical to make sure ditching cable will get you the savings you’re looking for over the long term. As they say, the devil's in the details.
Our latest firmware release included several updates which enabled us to officially launch our guide data subscription service and store at Account.TabloTV.com.
Within your Tablo app, you'll now be able to view your subscription status as well as create manual recordings (date, time and channel) – useful for those who choose not to continue with a paid subscription once the 30 day trial period is over as well as for those who want to extend time on regular recordings.

Did you know that you can use the Tablo web app on your smartphone and watch live and recorded content from your Tablo OTA antenna DVR anywhere in the world?
Yes, it might be a tiny screen, but when you’re missing the game, on the bus, or waiting in line at the DMV, it’s a great option to watch content, or if you’re running late, to schedule a recording so you don’t miss a show.

But as of this weekend, that list grew by leaps and bounds with the launch of a Tablo Plex Channel, lovingly coded by two awesome Tablo fans, Michael Reid and David Van Ronk. For those of us who are less technologically inclined, cutting the cord can be intimidating. But fear not! There are a number of user-friendly technologies on the market that can help you to access a similar quality and variety of content that you've come accustomed to with cable, but at a fraction of the cost.
This is why today we’d like to give you insight into different cord cutting technologies on the market and how we’ve designed Tablo to work with them as part of a larger cord-cutting ecosystem.
