Canadian Cable Companies Under Fire by Regulators Over Skinny Basic 
 

Canada's TV regulator the CRTC held hearings this week on the implementation of a mandated $25 'skinny basic' package of cable channels. While consumers were initially excited, complaints began flooding in once it was discovered that fees and removal of discounts made the package unattractive. 

One provider even admitted to creating training materials that guided customer service reps to avoid mentioning its availability.

While the cablecos have agreed to some concessions it took a national hearing to make it happen and $25 is still more expensive than free OTA. One more reason to cut the cord! 
 

FCC Scraps Set-Top-Box Plan for App-Based Plan 
 

Regulators and the cable industry in the US are at odds as well with the FCC choosing to scrap a divisive plan to overhaul the cable set-top-box in favor of requiring cablecos to provide an app for set-top-box manufacturers selling more than 5 million units per year.

Of course folks like Comcast don't like this idea any better than the previous one because it too will eat in to the $6-$14 billion dollars in annual rental fee revenues that cablecos extract from consumers. Yes, BILLION. And they wonder why subscribers are leaving in droves!
