Smart TVs vs. Streaming Set-Top-Boxes

Many consumers purchased a new Smart TV on Black Friday but some are likely planning to bypass the 'brain' of their new set in favor of a streaming set-top-box. Why? As Forbes explains, development for Smart TVs is quite difficult and the hardware can be underpowered (even on new sets) which leads to poor app experiences and lack of content variety.

Do you exclusively use your Smart TV for streaming or have you ditched it in favor of a set-top-box? Tell us on Twitter or Facebook and we might use your comment in an upcoming Tablo blog post on this subject.

Netflix Now Offers (Some) Ability to Download for Offline Viewing

This week Netflix announced that it's added the ability download some of its shows for viewing when you're offline. This is great news for folks who travel frequently, parents trying to keep little ones occupied on the go, and folks battling internet datacaps.

If you want to find out what new Netflix content you'll be able to stream (and maybe even download) in December, check out the US list here and the Canadian list here. Our pick is Captain America Civil War which actually made a member of our support team shed a tear it was so good.

Canadian Corner: Pick & Pay Arrives... And it Actually Makes TV MORE Expensive

Over the past year, the CRTC has done its best to rein in Canada's cable TV industry but has had little success in putting a dent in their profiteering. Phase two of the process - the unbundling of specialty channels - took effect yesterday, which should have allowed Canadians to add the Food Network or a news channel on top of their 'skinny basic' package to save some money.

But of course the cablecos have arranged the packages and individual channel costs so that savings - if any - are marginal. "It's very frustrating," says MTS customer Cory Boehm in this CBC story. "I think the CRTC had good intent, and I think the TV providers are trying to find loopholes."
