OK... now let's get to it!

Q&A > Why Does Playback Work Differently on the Same Device?

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from RJ who says, "When I use some apps on Apple TV the fast-forward is a very short 10 seconds but on other apps it's 30 seconds. Can this be changed?"

Every streaming TV platform has its own built-in 'player software' which is what displays your favorite shows on the screen and allows you to play, pause, rewind, and fast-forward. This software is designed, built, and maintained by the streaming platform itself... for example Roku, Android TV, Apple TV, or Fire TV.

Alternatively, app designers can choose to buy commercial player software from a third party or even design, build, and maintain their own custom version for their streaming app to use. Companies with significant financial and engineering resources and expertise like Netflix opt for this DIY approach which allows for a level of customization that isn't otherwise achievable.

This is also why smaller companies, including Tablo, use the platform's standard player software. Not only does it ensure compatibility between the app and the player but it allows engineering and financial resources to be focused on more important aspects of app development or creating new programming.

Finally, for those looking for a longer fast-forward on Apple TV, try pressing and holding the button instead of clicking.
