Q&A > Why Is My Whole Network Suddenly So Slow?

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Laura who says, "My fast internet has suddenly slowed to a crawl. I'm getting lots of buffering when I'm streaming and even loading web pages is taking forever, but my internet provider says nothing is wrong. I've rebooted my router and checked that it's up-to-date. What else can I do?"

When broadband internet reverts to dial-up speeds overnight, most are quick to blame their ISP. But when that has been ruled out — either by a troubleshooting call or by connecting a laptop directly to the router or modem via Ethernet — you need to start looking at other suspects.

Sometimes a reboot or a firmware update on your home's Wi-Fi router will fix the issue. But if the slowness persists and devices connected via Ethernet seem unaffected, look for potential sources of invisible Wi-Fi interference in the home.

Sometimes it's a new microwave. Sometimes it's a baby monitor. In Laura's case, the culprit was a new Bluetooth audio dongle installed over the holidays within feet of her router. Moving the dongle and switching her router's Wi-Fi channel selector from AUTO to a specific and less crowded option fully resolved the problem.
