Q&A > Will a New Streaming Device Speed Up My Old TV?

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Ken who says, "I have an older Samsung Smart TV and the interface is incredibly slow. If I connect a streaming stick will that help or do they also depend on the TV's processor?"

One of the major downsides of purchasing a Smart TV is that the 'smarts' will age long before the screen dies. If your older Smart TV's interface is super sluggish and/or doesn't support all of the apps that you'd like to use, connecting a separate streaming box or stick can make a huge difference.

The streaming device will totally bypass the television's processor so all it needs is a working HDMI port and the ability to switch inputs. The streaming device doesn't even have to run the same operating system. For example, you can connect an Apple TV to a Samsung Smart TV or put a Fire TV stick on a 'vintage' Roku-powered television.

If your television also supports CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) you can even have your television automatically switch to your new streaming device's HDMI input when any key on the streaming remote is pressed.
