Q&A > Should I Leave My Cord Cutting Gear on 24/7?
Wall Outlet

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from David who says, "Is it all right to leave my Tablo DVR on 24/7? What about other cord cutting gear?"

While it's financially and environmentally smart to monitor and try to cut down electricity use as much as possible, your cord cutting gear is not the place to look for savings.

DVRs like Tablo need to remain powered up to catch scheduled recordings, as well as to download fresh TV guide data during overnight maintenance. Thankfully it only uses a fraction of the power of a standard cable company DVR, just 15 watts at maximum during use, versus a cable box that can use 35 watts when idle. Roku devices, for example, use even less power, at 4.5 watts while streaming.

Most streaming devices even have automatic power-saving idle modes which won't just save you money but will allow for a faster boot-up when you're ready to watch TV again.

If you're looking for more effective ways to save energy, it's best to look at how you heat/cool your home, your water heater, and other major appliances like stoves, washers, and dryers.

Have a question about cord cutting that you'd like answered? Send us a note and you may see your question in an upcoming issue of Cord Cutting This Week!
