Q&A > Do I Need to Buy a New TV to Add HDMI ports?

Low VHF

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Tom who says, "I have an older TV that works just fine, but it only has two HDMI ports. Is there a way to add more HDMI ports or do I need to buy a new TV?"

There are LOTS of devices that you might want to connect to your television via HDMI, like DVRs, streaming players, gaming systems, DVD players, soundbars, and more.

But even the latest TVs generally only have two or three HDMI slots, which can leave you trying to reach behind the TV to swap devices. Not only is this annoying, but it can cause undue stress on your TV's ports.

If you're in the same boat as Tom, pick up an HDMI switch. (Be careful not to get an HDMI splitter, which is a different thing.) These cost-effective dongles allow you to connect multiple HDMI devices to a single HDMI port on your TV and switch between them with a remote control.
