IN-DEPTH: Why Some Smart TVs Are A Nightmare to Use
January is one of the most popular times to purchase a new television, and these days it's almost impossible to buy a one that doesn't have some sort of 'smart' internet-connected features.
And that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Having apps built right into your TV can make cord cutting easier, especially if you have family members that get confused by handling multiple remotes or switching inputs.
But cord cutters need to choose their TV sets wisely because, as this excellent Input Magazine piece outlines, "The two market leaders' proprietary software is absolutely terrible, and they should be ashamed."
While Samsung and LG make great quality screens, their 'smarts' are flawed, frustrating and unituitive, lack support longevity, and have limited app selections because they're difficult to code for.
This is why LG and Samsung are losing market share to brands who've standardized on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV-based platforms.
If you have a Samsung or LG Smart TV tell us what you think about its 'smart' features via Facebook or Twitter.
Q&A: Will Tablo Be Adding ATSC 3.0 Tuners Soon?
Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.
Today's question comes from Stanley who asks, "Will Tablo be adding ATSC 3.0 tuners soon?"
Over the last two weeks we've shared a few links to articles about the current state of the very slow transition to a new Over-the-Air broadcast standard called ATSC 3.0.
A few pieces have hinted at our plans for the future, given that ATSC 3.0 isn't backwards compatible with current-generation technology.
But this week we've published an official update in our blog series titled 'What Cord Cutters Need to Know About ATSC 3.0', that addresses Stanley's question.
If you're a cord cutter who watches Over-the-Air TV with an antenna — whether or not you use a Tablo — we really think you should read through the entire series.
But the TL;DR is, yes we're evaluating technology that could enable a future ATSC 3.0-capable Tablo DVR but we don't have any specific timeline in mind for its release. Why? Despite the hype, a full ATSC 3.0 transition is still years away.
