Cord Cutting This Week - The Skinny on ATSC 3.0, Cord Cutting Going Mainstream & MoreĀ

Happy Friday Cord Cutters!

This week we're talking about a new OTA TV broadcast standard called ATSC 3.0 and what it means for cord cutters. (The TL;DR is that there's no need to panic, it's years away still!)

We're also checking out Twitter's new Roku channel, how cord cutting is going mainstream, this week's must-see TV and more!

OK... now let's get to it!

IN-DEPTH: What Cord Cutters Need to Know About ATSC 3.0

A new OTA TV standard has been approved by the FCC which will blend audio and video delivered Over-the-Air and additional info (like commercials) delivered over broadband internet connections. We've posted a deep dive on what ATSC 3.0 means for cord cutters on the Tablo blog.

Good news: If you're enjoying free antenna TV today, nothing will change about how you receive signals until well into 2019 which means your current gear - including Tablo - will continue to work.

Bad news: While there's no set cut-off date for ATSC 1.0 signals, they will eventually end and new technology will be needed that can handle the hybrid signal and higher quality picture and sound.

We encourage you to review the blog post and video to learn more. If you have questions, send them our way on on Twitter or Facebook. We'll do our best to answer!

NEWS: Rate of Cord Cutting Spikes in 1st Quarter of 2017

Pay TV subscriber losses in the first quarter of 2017 are making even cord cutting naysayers take notice. The number of households ditching cable hit over 700,000 - a fivefold increase over the same period last year.

Experts point to a larger supply of technology and streaming options for cord cutters hitting the market, meeting a demand that was always there.

Once added, you'll be able to watch live video while keeping a real-time eye on the tweets related to the content. Don't have a Roku? There are already Twitter apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox One.

Have you watched live video via the Twitter app on your streaming device? Tell us what you've tuned into on Twitter or Facebook.

CANADIAN CORNER: 7% of Canadian Homes Using Banned 'Android' Boxes

A recent study showed that despite the ban on sales of so-called 'fully loaded' Android TV devices, almost 7% of Canadian homes are regularly streaming pirated TV content using one of these boxes. Given the lack of streaming TV choice for Canadians, their continued popularity in the face of legal crackdowns isn't surprising.
Do you feel like you have no choice but to pirate content because of the lack of streaming options?
