Cord Cutting is a Bigger Bargain than Ever

Tired of seeing the raft of articles using 'new math' to claim cord cutting was unlikely to result in consumer savings, Jared Newman at TechHive fought back with his own missive this week, even pointing to a Reddit thread where consumers were poking fun at one of most recent offending articles. How much money have you saved as a cord cutter? Let us know via Facebook or Twitter.

New Android TV Device from Xiaomi Expected Soon

The Verge reported earlier this week that the highly anticipated Mi Box Android TV device may be on store shelves as soon as October. The device is 4K capable and is rumored to have an attractive sub-$100 price point. For folks looking for an upgrade to their Nexus Player, it could be a great choice.

How an Antenna Can Complement your Roku Experience

Roku is the favorite streaming set-top-box for the majority of Tablo fans. In a guest post on the Roku blog, Chris Brantner from CutCableToday.com talked about the benefits of pairing an Over-the-Air antenna with streaming services and how Roku and Tablo can help unify access to both streaming and live, local TV in a single easy-to-use interface. You can check out some power-user tips for the Tablo Roku channel on our blog

P.S. We have tested the new Roku streaming stick (look for the one with the black body, not the purple one) and it's amazingly powerful for the price.

Canadian Cable Companies Under Fire by Regulators Over Skinny Basic

Canada's TV regulator the CRTC held hearings this week on the implementation of a mandated $25 'skinny basic' package of cable channels. While consumers were initially excited, complaints began flooding in once it was discovered that fees and removal of discounts made the package unattractive.

One provider even admitted to creating training materials that guided customer service reps to avoid mentioning its availability.

While the cablecos have agreed to some concessions it took a national hearing to make it happen and $25 is still more expensive than free OTA. One more reason to cut the cord!

FCC Scraps Set-Top-Box Plan for App-Based Plan

Regulators and the cable industry in the US are at odds as well with the FCC choosing to scrap a divisive plan to overhaul the cable set-top-box in favor of requiring cablecos to provide an app for set-top-box manufacturers selling more than 5 million units per year.

Of course folks like Comcast don't like this idea any better than the previous one because it too will eat in to the $6-$14 billion dollars in annual rental fee revenues that cablecos extract from consumers. Yes, BILLION. And they wonder why subscribers are leaving in droves!
