Cord Cutting This Week - Is Streaming 'Subscription Fatigue' Becoming a Huge Problem for Consumers?

Tablo Cord Cutting This Week

Happy Friday Cord Cutters!

This week we're talking about the concept of 'subscription fatigue' and whether the plethora of streaming options available is truly a problem for consumers.

Also: Antenna advice Q&A, short cuts, must-see OTA TV, and more.

As always, if you know of someone who might need some insight or help with cutting the cord on cable or satellite, please forward our newsletter, or use the handy share buttons at the top of this email.

OK... now let's get to it!

NEWS: Is 'Subscription Fatigue' Real?

As cord cutting continues to accelerate, tons of new ad-supported and subscription-based streaming services - like Disney+ - are launching into an already crowded marketplace.

This abundance of choice is often cited by detractors as a downside to the cord-cutting movement, and that consumers are experiencing 'subscription fatigue' from 'having' to pay for so many different streaming options.

But TechHive correctly argues that, "... no one subscribes to all of those services at the same time, which means subscription fatigue is a bigger problem for streaming video companies than for consumers."

This increasingly competitive landscape is forcing content owners to rethink their strategies and keep costs low. Plus, in the no-contracts world of streaming TV, they have to work hard every month to keep users/subscribers happy so they don't switch to a competitor.

Isn't that what we all wanted from cable?

Q&A: Why Is My Over-the-Air Signal So Bad?
broadcast towers
Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

Today's question comes from Tom who says, "I live less than 5 miles from our local broadcast towers. I've tried three different quality antennas and I'm still not able to get a solid signal. What am I doing wrong?"

It's always frustrating when you feel like you're doing everything right, but not getting the result you're expecting.

Tom didn't provide specifics about his location or Over-the-Air TV setup, so it's possible that bad antenna positioning, interference, or geography is to blame for the poor quality of his signals.

However, there may be something that Tom is overlooking given his proximity to his local broadcast towers: the signals coming from his antenna may be too strong.

If you live in the shadows of your local broadcast towers, and you choose a 'good quality' amplified antenna, it might be too powerful and send too much signal to the tuner in your TV or DVR.

'Overdriving' the tuners like this can result in an experience similar to those whose antennas are NOT powerful enough - breakups or pixelization in the video and audio streams, or the inability to receive certain channels at all.

Think this might be happening to you? First, try removing the amplifier from the antenna (if it's not integrated). You may need to swap out your 'fancy' antenna for a more basic, unamplified model though like the Winegard Flatwave Micro, the Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse, or the Mohu Leaf Metro.

When it comes to antennas, sometimes bigger isn't always better.

(FYI, all Mohu antennas are 40% off right now with the coupon code Mohu10Years)

CANADIAN CORNER: Streaming Will Soon Eclipse Cable in Canada

A new report shows that the number of Canadians with streaming subscriptions will eclipse the number of traditional TV subscribers by 2020.

While streaming adoption is slower than in the US (where there are MANY more options), this business will continue to grow as more options including Disney+, Apple, and Pluto TV launch in this country in the coming year or so.
