NEWS: Local News Broadcast Merger Concerns Grow
Over the past week, concern over the merger of two local broadcast companies - Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tribune Media - has grown exponentially. Here's why...
Sinclair has been accused of using its stations to advance a right-leaning agenda via 'must run' segments in news broadcasts, and has required local anchors to voice anti-'fake news' promotional spots.
Sinclair currently owns 193 stations delivering local news to 39% of US households. After its proposed merger with Tribune Media, that number would well to 72% of households.
There are FCC rules in place which prevent a single company from owning more than 39% of the country's local news outlets, however Sinclair has told the regulator they plan to sell some stations in contested areas. Still, opponents say Sinclair will continue to influence those stations and that the new proposed ownership groups would simply operate as proxies.
Some anchors and journalists currently working at Sinclair stations disagree with how big the kerfuffle has gotten, and have defended the work they do and even the anti-'fake news' promos.

Despite a smaller number of alternative content sources as compared to consumers in the US, a new study shows that 1 in 4 Canadians does not subscribe to a traditional pay TV service.
14% of respondents say they watch all of their TV via Over-the-Top services (most notably Netflix), and 7% say they watch Over-the-Air TV as a supplement to streaming.
