Tablo has a new DVR. Tablo is a long time player in, what I like to call, the ‘bring-your-own-hard-drive’ DVR space. There are a few players there and the new one (from Tablo) has ATSC 3.0 tuners.
For people that aren’t super-entrenched in this, ATSC 3.0 is the newest standard for over-the-air television broadcasts. ATSC 3.0 brings with it, a slew of new features, but most importantly, it means being able to broadcast 4K, HDR, over-the-air, where all you need is a tuner that will receive it and a regular antenna. You don’t even need a new antenna, if you’ve got an old TV antenna from the 60’s, that’ll still work!
So this new Tablo ATSC 3.0 has four ASTC 3.0 tuners in it and it’s also important to point out that it’s backward compatible with ATSC 1.0 which is the normal stuff that you get over-the-air.
As cable subscriptions wane, I’ll be curious to see if more people start picking (OTA broadcast TV) up. It seems more popular now than say, five years ago. I think that’s becuase a lot of the streaming services don’t offer live, locals that you want. So if you’re doing the cord cutting thing and you want your local sports, local news, or other programming. Then this is your best and sometimes only, option for doing that.
