Tablo Apps & Compatible Devices

Watch Live & Recorded TV on Your Favorite Device

As a network-connected DVR, Tablo lets you enjoy your favorite Over-the-Air TV programs via apps on all of your devices including Smart TVs, streaming media players, gaming systems, computers and mobile devices.

To enjoy Over-the-Air content on your big screen TV, Tablo supports the most popular HDMI-connected streaming media devices including:

  • Roku
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Apple TV
  • Xiaomi MiBox (Android TV)

As well as gaming systems including:

  • Nvidia Shield (Android TV)
  • Xbox One

Tablo also supports casting to Chromecast via Android mobile devices and PC.

The ‘best’ set-top-box for you depends on your needs and budget, but keep these considerations in mind while shopping:

Splurge vs. Save - Lower-end models may lack the speed or features you want

Box vs. Stick - Newer stick-style models have improved speed, but may be missing features

App Support - Some devices do not support a full range of TV streaming apps

Current vs. Previous Generation - Everyone loves a deal, but newer hardware is a better long-term investment

Certified vs. Generic Android - Generic 'KODI boxes' can cause app incompatibility or streaming quality issues

Set-Top-Box vs. Smart TVTablo supports some Smart TVs, but set-top-boxes provide more flexibility and power

Roku is the most popular streaming device cord cutters use with Tablo OTA DVRs.

Benefits
- Access to most Tablo screens
- Support for over 3,500+ paid or free ‘channels’

Drawbacks
- Does not offer access to full Tablo settings screen
- Lacks some filter/sort options
- Does not support Tablo Connect
- Does not provide the ability to set manual recordings

We Recommend
Roku streaming stick (black body), Roku Premiere+, Roku Ultra

Amazon Fire TV is the 2nd most popular streaming device for use with Tablo OTA DVRs.

Benefits
- Access to all Tablo screens and filters including settings
- Support for over 7,000+ paid or free apps and games
- Range of affordable devices including set-top-boxes and sticks

We Recommend
Amazon Fire TV streaming media player (box), Amazon Fire TV stick

Apple fans should consider the speedy 4th Gen Apple TV.

We Recommend
4th Generation Apple TV

(Previous generation Apple TVs do not support an app store and therefore do not offer a native Tablo app, but will support Airplay from the Tablo app on other iOS devices.)

The Nvidia SHIELD is great for gamers and home theatre hobbyists because of its power and flexibility.

Benefits
- Super-fast in-app navigation

- Supports setting manual recordings
- Can be controlled with a gamepad or optional remote control
- Available in the US and Canada

Drawbacks
- Expensive - price starts at $250
- Supports a very limited streaming app ecosystem
- Requires you to pry the device out of the hands of a gamer to actually watch TV

We Recommend
Xbox One, Xbox One S

Chromecast is not a streaming set-top-box. It is a screen mirroring device that connects to your TV.

Chromecast allows you to begin video playback on Android mobile devices or PCs with the Chrome extension and 'cast' that content to your big screen TV.

Benefits
- Access to all Tablo screens and filters including settings
- Affordable - starts at $35
- Available in the US and Canada
- Supports Tablo Connect
- Supports setting manual recordings

Drawbacks
- The multiple 'hops' required between the devices can cause video buffering or video control delays
- Does not offer a 'traditional' remote control
- Offers fewer granular controls for live streams
- Is not compatible with the Tablo app on iOS devices

We Recommend
We do not recommend the Chromecast for your primary TV. It is best used for secondary TVs and occasional viewing.

Now that you know more about compatible streaming set-top-boxes and sticks, here's some additional reading that you might find helpful:

More than half of new televisions being sold today are Smart TVs - television displays that connect to and allow you to stream content over the internet or your home network.

Tablo supports most of the following Smart TV brands and styles:

  • Roku Smart TVs (multiple manufacturers)
  • Amazon Fire TV Edition Smart TVs (multiple manufacturers)
  • LG Smart TVs running LG webOS 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 operating systems
  • Smart TVs running an Android TV operating system (mutiple manufacturers)

Not all Smart TVs are created equal. In addition to looking for a television with a quality picture, you should be concerned about where it gets its 'smarts'.

Cord cutters, keep these considerations in mind:

  • Operating System - Does it use technology from streaming set-top-box device makers like Roku, mainstream operating systems like Android TV, or a proprietary operating system?
  • App Support - Smart TVs using tech from set-top-box makers generally support a wider variety of apps and will have access to new apps sooner.
  • Power & Longevity - The 'smarts' inside your television can reach obsolescence quickly and wind up lacking the software and power required to use popular streaming apps.

One of every 8 Smart TVs shipped today in the US is based on Roku's operating system.

Benefits
- Access to most Tablo screens
- Support for over 3,500+ paid or free ‘channels’
- Wide range - from base models to 4K HDR
- Manufacturers include TCL, Elements, Hisense, Hitachi, Insignia and Sharp
- Available online and in-store (US and Canada)

Drawbacks
- Does not offer access to full Tablo settings screen
- Lacks some filter/sort options
- Does not provide the ability to set manual recordings

We Recommend
Roku Smart TVs are so popular due to their affordability, user-friendly interface and range of prices/styles. If you're a cord cutter choosing a Smart TV over a set-top-box, these are your best bets.

Amazon Fire TV Edition Smart TVs are new to the market.

Benefits
- Access to all Tablo screens and filters including settings
- Support for over 7,000+ paid or free apps and games
- Manufacturers are Element and Westinghouse
- Supports setting manual recordings

Drawbacks
- Available only in the US
- Limited manufacturers and options
- User interface pushes Amazon Video content; can be off-putting for non-subscribers

We Recommend
Amazon Fire TV set-top-boxes and sticks offer an excellent Tablo experience, but these Smart TVs are too new to the market to fully reccomend.

LG Smart TVs running webOS 2.0, 3.0 & 3.5 operating systems are the only proprietary system Smart TVs with a native Tablo app.

Benefits
- Access to all Tablo screens and filters including settings
- Supports setting manual recordings

Drawbacks
- Proprietary operating system means a limited app selection
- Older models may not have the processing power or memory required to run the Tablo app

We Recommend
Newer LG Smart TVs running webOS 3.0 or 3.5.

Smart TVs leveraging the Android TV operating system offer excellent flexibility.

Benefits
- Access to all Tablo screens and filters including settings
- Supports setting manual recordings
- Access to a wide range of popular apps and games from the Google Play store
- Manufacturers include Sony, Philips and Sharp
- Available in the US and Canada

Drawbacks
- Older models may not have the processing power or memory required to run the Tablo app

We Recommend
We have not tested all makes/models of Android-based Smart TVs, but Sony generally offers good quality televisions. However, the in-app navigation speed is generally slower than Android TV set-top-boxes.
