Q&A > How Often Should I Replace Gadget Cabling?

Send us your most pressing TV viewing questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Vijay who says, "Over the last few years I've had a couple of problems that after a lot of troubleshooting eventually traced back to faulty cabling. Is there a rule of thumb for how often things like Ethernet cables or other connectors should be replaced?"

When something goes wrong with your streaming TV setup or any other gadget, even the most technology-savvy folks may not think about checking or replacing the cabling.

The truth is that over time, Ethernet, coaxial, and USB cables as well as power supplies and other accessories can start to fail, potentially causing intermittent problems that are hard to diagnose. Becoming a devotee of proper cable management instead of just shoving things behind the entertainment center can help. And If you want to be proactive like Vijay, try replacing things like Ethernet cables every 5-7 years.

A more realistic choice is a 'junk drawer' approach. Simply keep a few extra cables around so you can try a fresh (or at least alternative) cable, connector, or power supply as a troubleshooting step the next time you run into a problem.
