DirectTV, Comcast Raising Prices

If you still haven't cut the cord and you're a DirectTV or Comcast customer, you might want to plan to axe your service before January. Comcast is boosting prices and fees starting on the 1st, and DirectTV's rates are slated to go up $2-$6 per month starting on the 22nd. Both companies are also increasing fees for regional sports and broadcast TV.

If you're looking to avoid these price hikes and get started on cutting the cord, check out our how-to guide

Reviews: Mesh WiFi Gadgets

While hard-wiring your entire ecosystem of cord cutting products will always give you the fastest and most stable connections for streaming video, sometimes Ethernet just isn't possible without causing a tripping hazard or punching holes in walls.

A good quality WiFi router is usually enough for most homes, but if you have a larger home or are struggling with spotty WiFi in certain rooms, a WiFi Mesh product might be for you. Luckily the folks at ArsTechnica recently put some of the most popular WiFi Mesh options through their paces.

Have you tried any of these products as an alternative to Ethernet or Powerline Ethernet adapters? Let us know via

Canadian Corner: Cable TV is About to be Disrupted, and the CRTC Knows It

The CRTC recently renewed TV provider licences for a single year, as opposed to the usual 7 year renewal window. Media policy expert Irene Berkowitz recently posited in the Globe & Mail that the CRTC did so because they recognize the incredible amount of change the industry is undergoing.

"Big disruptions tend to progress exponentially, not linearly, meaning their impact doubles every year or so," said Berkowitz. "As often observed about transformative change, it happens very slowly, then all at once. In this climate, renewing TV licences for seven years could be like renewing for 128 (seven doublings of one)."
