Apple Announces new 'TV' App for Apple TV... Without Netflix

This week Apple announced a new app called 'TV' intended to be a hub for streaming video viewing and discovery. Designed primarily for use on Apple TV but available across their range of devices, the app leverages the cross-device search and single-sign-on features announced earlier this year.

Although the app doesn't launch until December, critics have already noted a big missing piece: Netflix. Why? Well, this piece from TechHive might explain why the streaming giant is missing from not just this app, but many of the set-top-box recommendation engines.

A few users have asked already if Apple's 'TV' app will be compatible with Tablo. Because we haven't yet received the documentation around this new app, it's unclear whether this will be possible. We'll share more info as it becomes available so stay tuned.

Napflix - The Streaming Service for Sleepy People

Do you like to nap? Do you fall asleep with the TV on in the background every night? If so, you might want to check out Napflix. It describes itself as a video platform "where you can find the most silent and sleepy content selection to relax your brain and easily fall asleep."

Although beware of the Swiss Chalet rotisserie chicken channel. It'll probably make you hungry instead of sleepy.

Google Fiber Halts Rollout

We know how important affordable stand-alone internet is for cord cutters.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping that the folks at Google would bring fast, affordable internet to your town, you may be waiting a long time.
This week they announced a halt to rollouts in new cities and a change of focus to new technology and deployment methods. Boo-urns!

Canadian Corner: Crave TV Adds Showtime Programming

In a shocking twist, this week Bell announced its streaming service Crave TV will now include content from US cable network Showtime. Until now, Showtime has only premiered series in Canada on Bell's The Movie Network pay TV service at the same time as the television show’s U.S. debut.

It remains to be seen whether this is a crack in the Canadian cable monopoly's content wall, or just a bid for Bell to capture subscribers from rival Rogers' soon-to-be-shuttered Shomi service.
