Q&A > Can I Reprogram Streaming Service Buttons on My Remote?

quick launch buttons

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Kristof who says, "I don't watch Netflix or Disney+. Is there a way reprogram those buttons on my streaming remote so they launch apps I actually use?"

With many folks set to purchase or receive new streaming TV devices as a gift over the coming months, we wanted to cover this popular question. Many streaming device remotes come with branded buttons that will immediately launch you into a specific app. They're pretty handy if you use those services, but if you're like Kristof they can feel like an annoying waste of space.

Since streaming services pay big money to device manufacturers to be featured on those branded buttons as a form of advertising, they can't be re-programmed to something else. However, some models of Amazon Fire TV and Roku remotes come with an alternative: user-programmable buttons.

Amazon's Alexa Voice Remote Pro and Roku's Voice Remote Pro both allow you to create and set custom shortcuts to apps or settings from these two buttons. Both can be purchased separately to upgrade your existing devices (check for compatibility first), but Roku's automatically comes bundled with its higher-end streamers and soundbars.
