OK... now let's get to it!

Q&A > How Can I Get Local Stations That Switched to ATSC 3.0?
ATSC 3.0

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Ronald who says, "Several Over-the-Air TV stations in Orlando have upgraded to the NextGen ATSC 3.0 standard and now I can't watch or record them. What can I do?"

The new ATSC 3.0 Over-the-Air broadcast standard is slowly rolling out across the United States. While it's true that receiving NextGen broadcasts requires a newer compatible tuner or TV, there's no need to rush out and buy one to keep watching your favorite channels.

Why? As part of the ATSC 3.0 rollout process, local stations must also continue to broadcast in the existing ATSC 1.0 format for at least five years. When a station starts testing or broadcasting in ATSC 3.0, its ATSC 1.0 broadcasts will often move to a different frequency to accommodate this requirement. That means Ronald should have no problem picking up or recording his local stations again after running a rescan on his current TV or DVR.

Even if Roland were to get an ATSC 3.0-capable TV or tuner, he wouldn't see much benefit at the moment as today's broadcasts contain the same programming available via ATSC 1.0 and don't take advantage of the 4K video or enhanced audio capabilities the new standard promises.
