Q&A > Why Is My Indoor Antenna So Finicky?

Antennas Direct vs Novowave

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Janet who says, "I purchased an indoor TV antenna over the holidays. If it gets bumped a tiny bit or the cord touches anything else the picture gets blocky. I'm tired of messing with it. Is the antenna defective?"

We'd estimate that more than 70% of TV antennas sold online today are absolute junk, propped up by fake reviews and questionable marketing.

And it sounds like Janet is running into a common issue with these garbage antennas: cheap, unshielded cabling. If your TV antenna has a very thin and pliable cable between it and the connector on the end, it's likely either poorly shielded or unshielded.

This can allow interference from other nearby electronics to ruin your Over-the-Air TV signal.

TV antennas from quality manufacturers should come with higher-quality RG6 or at least RG59 coaxial cable which properly shields the signals from this type of interference. They should also allow you to remove and replace the coaxial cable in case you need a longer one or if the cable gets damaged.

If your TV antenna doesn't, return it and purchase a different model from a recommended brand
