Q&A > Can I Boost My TV Antenna's Signal Without Moving It?

Roof Mount Antenna

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from John who says, "How can I increase the signal strength of my TV antenna without raising it higher?"

If you occasionally have trouble pulling in a clear picture on a few channels, there are two main ways to improve the signal strength coming to an existing TV antenna:
While a signal amplifier won't help pull in stations you can't already get, it can give you enough power to maintain a clear picture through occasional dips in signal strength without needing to switch locations.

However, John didn't mention if his current antenna is already amplified. Trying to boost a signal that's already been amplified will often cause more problems than it solves because the 'bad' signal (aka noise) will also be increased.

In that case, improving your antenna's location or swapping it out for a more powerful model is still your best bet.

  • FOX Weather debuted this week with dedicated apps on iOS and Android mobile devices and will soon be streaming on Tubi.

  • After a very long wait, pro-consumer interim FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel has been nominated as the permanent chair. Rosenworcel was the lone dissenter in past years on issues including the repeal of net neutrality.

  • Verizon and Amazon are teaming up to bring 4/5G LTE broadband to rural customers, in a direct challenge to Starlink. But they need to launch some satellites first.

  • Happy Halloween! This creepy 1970s PSA warned of the evils of cable TV... Too bad a lot of us acted like teens in a horror flick and walked right into their trap.

  • CANADIAN CORNER - Crave has changed its plans bumping up the price to access content on streaming devices to $19.99/month, but including content from HBO and Showtime in a single tier. Watching on your phone, tablet, or laptop will cost less at $9.99/month, but there's no casting allowed. This is what happens when a telecom operates a streaming service. 🙃
