NFL Football Easier to Watch for Cord Cutters

Tablo Cord Cutting This Week

It's Friday again cord cutters!

This week we're talking about how watching pro sports as a cord cutter, especially NFL football, is getting easier all the time.

Also: Q&A on 4K Over-the-Air TV, short cuts, must-see OTA TV, and more.

As always, if you know of someone who might need some insight or help with cutting the cord on cable or satellite, please forward our newsletter, or use the handy share buttons at the top of this email.

OK... now let's get to it!

NEWS: NFL Football More Cord Cutting Friendly Than Ever

In the early days of cord cutting, things were rough for sports fans. But the tide has really turned for the 2020 season, especially for fans of NFL football.

Although YouTube TV is already one of the most expensive streaming services, you can now watch NFL Network and NFL RedZone via the service and still pay less than what DirecTV charges for the same content. Plus you can easily cancel your subscription once football season is over.

For less rabid fans, a mix of Amazon Prime and an Over-the-Air TV antenna for FOX, CBS, and NBC can deliver more than enough Thursday and Sunday NFL action.

Over the coming years, an antenna may be an even better bet for NFL fans. Rumor has it that Monday Night Football might move to ABC from ESPN as broadcast rights contracts between the league and the networks expire.

If pro sports leagues want to retain and grow their fanbases, they need to fully embrace cord cutting so let's hope this trend continues.

Q&A: How Can I Get 4K TV With My Antenna?
4K Antenna

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Richard who says, "I have a 4K TV and the antenna I bought says it's 4K as well but I don't seem to be getting any better quality than 1080. Why?"

The main reason you're not seeing 4K quality with your TV antenna is because there aren't any 4K broadcasts available Over-the-Air TV right now.

The current ATSC 1.0 standard has three options for video resolution: 1080i, 720p, or 480i which is more often used for older content not filmed in HD and shown on subchannels.

Even though your antenna claims it's 4K capable (because all antennas are) it won't be delivering super high def video quality until ATSC 3.0 is well into a full rollout. Even then, only major events like the Olympics or the Superbowl are likely be broadcast in that format.

If you want to take full advantage of your 4K TV in the meantime, connect your antenna to a tuner or DVR like Tablo that works with the NVIDIA SHIELD. This streamer uses AI up-scaling to artificially boost the picture quality of your video for a sharper image.

CANADIAN CORNER: Shocking Twist in Broadband Rate Battle

The ongoing wholesale broadband rate battle between Canada's major ISPs and independent competitors took a wild turn this week...

The Federal Court of Appeal unanimously sided with the little guys, in direct opposition to recent statements from the Federal Industry Minister.

*insert shocked face*

Bell and Rogers can still choose to take the case to the Supreme Court, so the fight isn't over quite yet.

And until the correct rates are applied and refunds have been given to independent ISPs on the overages already paid, Canadian customers aren't likely to see any changes on their bills.

Still, this is a major win for Canadians seeking fast, affordable internet.
