NEWS > NVIDIA SHIELD Interface Update Gets Mixed Reviews

Nvidia Shield UI

One of the things owners of the high-end NVIDIA SHIELD streaming player loved was that its user interface wasn't cluttered with ads.

But as all Android TV-based consumer devices move to the new 'Google TV'-style interface, that has changed somewhat. And a majority of SHIELD users (at least according to one poll) are not impressed. Some were so upset by the new 'discover' home screen that they've replaced the 'launcher' software on their devices.

Jared Newman at TechHive offered a dissenting voice, pointing out that the new interface provides content recommendations that are less invasive than other platforms without sacrificing easy access to your favorite apps from the home screen.

However, at least on Amazon Fire TV which is one of the biggest offenders, you can actually disable the home screen video ads, something that's not possible on Android TV. Yet.

If you have an NVIDIA SHIELD, tell us what you think about the new interface on Facebook or Twitter.

Q&A > How Can I Keep My Microwave from Interfering with Streaming?

microwave

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Richard who says, "We have a new microwave oven. And every time we use it the Tablo will start buffering. This didn't happen with our old microwave oven. Is there a fix?"

Microwaves are a major source of interference which can affect both Over-the-Air TV signals and to a larger extent your WiFi. And as Richard is discovering, some offer better shielding against spreading RF interference than others.

If your TV antenna or your home's WiFi router are near your microwave oven, try to move them further away if possible. Switching your streaming devices to use the 5Ghz WiFi frequency of your router can also help. Check that the couplings between your antenna and DVR or TV are secure and there are no breaks in the shielding on your antenna's coaxial cable.

If the problems persist, Richard may want to think about returning or replacing the microwave as it may have a faulty seal.

As streaming TV continues to grow at an intense pace, producers are scrambling to purchase, rent, and create new studio space for filming in Ontario.

And it's not just in Toronto... Hamilton, Pickering, and even Sudbury are seeing huge increases in film and television production and are working to scale local infrastructure to meet demand.
