NEWS: Update on YouTube TV FOX RSN Situation
Q&A: Do I Need To Turn My Fire TV Off At Night?
Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.
Today's question comes from Wendy who asks, "Do I need to unplug my Fire TV to make sure it doesn't stream and use up my data cap overnight?"
If your internet service provider has a data cap, you'll obviously want to avoid incurring overage fees by using more bandwidth than your cap allows during a single billing period.
Streaming Netflix 24/7 in HD would put the average cord cutter well over a standard 1 TB cap before the end of the month. (This is why may cord cutters who like to have the TV on in the background have added an Over-the-Air TV antenna to keep their bandwidth use in check.)
That being said, you don't need to unplug your streaming device at night. Streaming sticks powered via the TV's USB will turn off when the TV is powered off. Even for devices with their own power source, going back to the home screen before turning in for the night should keep most apps from streaming while you're snoozing.
However, if you routinely use apps like Netflix or YouTube that auto-play videos without user interaction, you may want to navigate to SETTINGS > MY FIRE TV > SLEEP or press and hold the HOME button for 3+ seconds to access SLEEP mode as an extra precaution.
When you want to use your Fire TV again, pressing any button on the remote will wake it up.
