NEWS: HBO MAX Launches... But Not on Roku or Fire TV

hbo max

HBO MAX launched earlier this week, expanding the selection of content available to cord cutters who subscribed to its earlier service iteration called HBO NOW.

Along with everything on HBO, subscribers get access to the entirety of popular franchises like Friends and The Big Bang Theory, Looney Tunes cartoons, and over 2,000 movies. The $14.99/month cost has not changed.

However, HBO's parent company AT&T failed to reach deals with Roku or Amazon to get the HBO MAX app distributed on those platforms. These battles between streaming services and tech companies over ads and revenue sharing have been an increasing friction point in the 'streaming wars'.

Consumers will just have to wait and see if this gets resolved.

Q&A: How Can I Tell Which Roku Model I Have?

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Judy who says, "I read that Hulu is ending support for some older Roku models. How do I know which model I have? There doesn't seem to be any details on the device itself."

Starting later next month, Hulu is indeed ending support for some very old Roku models which were sold between 2011 and 2012. These models simply don't have the processing power or technology needed for modern apps to run.

If you're not sure which Roku model you have, you can easily find out. Simply go to your Roku’s HOME screen and select SETTINGS > SYSTEM > ABOUT > OK

The model number will be listed at the top. You can find out what year it was introduced and other information using this handy Wikipedia list.

But long story short, if your Roku was introduced before 2016, it's time for an upgrade. If you can afford it, the Roku Ultra is always an excellent choice and will keep you streaming for many years to come.

CANADIAN CORNER: Broadband Rate Hearing To Proceed

Canada's big telecom companies requested that the CRTC hearing on wholesale broadband rates be delayed until it could be done in person. A judge however has dismissed that request so the hearing will proceed at the end of June via video conference.

This is welcome news for smaller ISPs who've been hoping that a Federal court's decision from last year to slash the rates paid for broadband access, and therefore even the competitive playing field, will eventually be upheld.
