OK... now let's get to it!

TOOLS: Do You Need A TV Antenna for Cord Cutting?

The team at TechHive posted an excellent piece this week entitled, "Do you need an antenna to cut the cord?"

While people love to endlessly debate what REALLY constitutes cutting the cord on cable, watching TV solely via an Over-the-Air antenna certainly meets the most strict definitions of the concept.

That being said, we'd argue a TV antenna isn't for all cord cutters. TechHive agrees and outlines some of the reasons why a cord cutter wouldn't necessarily need an antenna.

However, those who live in metropolitan areas where channel lineups are plentiful and varied should take advantage of free Over-the-Air TV.

Not only is it the best way to maximize your cord cutting savings and maintain full control over your recordings, but it can help those with data caps save bandwidth for content that's only available via streaming services.

Q&A: What's The Best Way to Avoid Commercials?
as seen on tv
Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

Today's question comes from Gene who says, "I want to cancel cable before fall but I can't stand watching commercials. Right now my Comcast DVR allows me to fast-forward through all of them. What cord-cutting options will give me the same type of control?"

Since the advent of the DVR, TV fans have been spoiled by the ability to fast-forward through ads on recorded content.

The good news is that most live TV streaming services offer DVR capabilities, although they may require an additional fee. The downside is that despite some improvements, the ability to fast-forward through commercials can vary.

Many have restrictions on ad-skipping for certain networks, or even certain shows so make sure to do your homework before you sign up. The quality of fast-forward previews (aka 'trick play') that make skipping ads easier also varies.

If you want full commercial skipping control — at least for your local broadcast TV networks — watch with an Over-the-Air TV antenna connected to an antenna-compatible OTA DVR.

Most makes and models of OTA DVRs offer basic fast-forward options on all completed recordings. But some — like the Tablo OTA DVR — have more advanced ad-avoidance features like fast-forward previews and/or even hands-free Automatic Commercial Skip.

Pair that with an ad-free on-demand streaming service like Netflix and you'll have no idea what your co-worker is talking about when he says, "Hey, did you see that commercial where the guy does the thing?"

Very slowly but surely Canadian streaming TV service Crave is adding support for new platforms.

This week owners of Android TV devices including Smart TVs and streaming players like the NVIDIA SHIELD and the Xiaomi Mi Box can now download and use an official Crave app.

Crave's owner Bell said in a release that additional platforms are coming soon, so hopefully, we'll see an official Roku channel added in the coming months.
