NEWS: Tech Journalists Continue to Miss the Point of Cord Cutting
Every few weeks, a new anti-cord cutting article will circulate, lamenting the erroneous 'fact' that cord cutting doesn't save you any money - despite all evidence to the contrary - or that the growth in terms of cord cutting choice for consumers is actually bad.
Thankfully there are some pundits (like Jared Newman at TechHive and Karl Bode at TechDirt) who truly understand the benefits of cord cutting and are firing back at their colleagues. They've gone after authors of articles bemoaning the cost of cord cutting as they attempt to recreate the bloated cable bundle while ignoring the awesome sources of FREE content like Over-the-Air TV, or theorize that consumers aren't smart enough to make purchasing decisions for themselves when faced with actual choice.
Let's combat some of this anti-cord cutting hype ourselves... How much are you saving since cutting the cord on cable? How easy did you find the process? Tell us on Twitter or Facebook.
GEAR: Evidence Mounts On New 4K Apple TV Coming This Fall
As app developers dig in to the latest tvOS beta code, there are more hints that a new 4K and HDR- capable Apple TV is coming this fall. When the previous-generation device launched, Apple was heavily criticized for the lack of ultra-high def support.
Is 4K and HDR support critical for you when it comes to new gear? Tell us on Twitter or Facebook.
NEWS: Verizon to Begin Throttling All Smartphone Videos
Speaking of high def video, if you're hoping to stream 4K or even 1080 content on your Verizon smartphone, you're out of luck as of this week. The carrier announced it's limiting streams on their mobile network to 480 or 720 quality, which isn't a huge deal on a tiny smartphone screen.
However, it becomes a bigger problem if you're using that phone as a cord cutting device to cast video to your TV, or when you're using your phone as a hotspot with a laptop.
As more consumers push cord cutting to the limit using unlimited mobile plans instead of broadband internet, and as net neutrality laws begin to erode, it's likely that service providers will continue to make changes to discourage this.
STREAMING: Mayweather vs. McGregor PPV Available Via Sling TV
If you're hoping to catch the McGregor/Mayweather fight this Sunday, you're probably thinking your only cord cutting options are to find a buddy with cable, or head to your local pub. However, if you've got a Sling TV account and $99 bucks, you can host fight night at your house!
For the the first time ever the streaming service will be offering the fight live as a Pay-Per-View stream, with pause, rewind, fast forward, and 6-days post-fight replay capabilities.
Even if you're not willing to shell out the big bucks for the title fight, if you've got an antenna you can still catch the pre-show special and preliminary bouts for free on FOX starting at 6:00 p.m. ET.
