NEWS > Cord Cutting Predictions for 2021
fortune teller
The last year or so has proven that you can't predict everything, but it's safe to say that cord cutting will continue to increase in 2021.

Economic realities and the growth of services and technology to help consumers ditch cable TV will make sure of it.

The team at Cord Cutters News shared their own predictions, some based on current trends like free ad-supported streaming and niche cable channels shutting down, or realities (like ATSC 3.0 not being ready for prime time).

Some were admittedly bolder, like former editor Luke Bouma's guess that Apple will be exiting the streaming TV hardware business.

Q&A > Why Doesn't My Tablo Use PSIP Guide Data?
PSIP versus paid guide data

Send us your most pressing cord cutting questions via email so we can answer them in an upcoming issue.

This week's question comes from Raymond who asks, "Why doesn't Tablo use PSIP for the TV Guide? It's free and it means I wouldn't have to connect the DVR to the internet."

For those who aren't savvy to the lingo, PSIP (aka Program and System Information Protocol) is the TV Guide Data that's embedded right into the broadcast stream of Over-the-Air TV.

While it is free and doesn't require an internet connection to receive, PSIP data usually only extends 2-3 days, is very basic, and sometimes unreliable.

For this reason, Over-the-Air DVRs like Tablo rely instead on enhanced guide data provided by companies like Gracenote that's delivered over the internet. While it's not free, this data is more accurate, goes out a full two weeks, and includes important metadata required for setting reliable recording schedules like series and episode details and whether the show is new or a re-run.

CANADIAN CORNER > More Info on Disney+ Star
Disney Plus Star

As we told you last month, starting February 23rd Canadians will be paying more for Disney+. That's because the company is adding content from its US streaming service Hulu under a new section of the app called Star.

Now we know more about what type of content to expect. The majority will be older movies and TV shows, but some newer content and Star/Hulu originals like Solar Opposites from the creators of Rick & Morty will also be available.
