Why did you cut the cord?
After many years of being forced into two-year cable contracts for services and channels I didn’t need, I’d finally had enough.
We had a pretty slim cable package with no premium movie channels and were still paying over $200/month for cable/phone/internet which the cable companies practically force you to bundle together for the best ’savings‘.
No more! I did my homework. Lots of it. And when the contract ended, I cut the cord and used it to swing into some sweet savings.
Even if you can stream YouTube or standard Netflix content easily, older and slower WiFi router technology, improper router positioning, and interference from other appliances or neighbors can cause buffering issues when streaming high quality video like the HDTV content from your Tablo OTA DVR. For many people, saving money is the primary reason for cutting the cord on cable or satellite. This isn’t surprising given that the costs of cable are actually rising four times faster than inflation. That’s simply not sustainable for the average family.
Despite the best efforts of the cable industry, you can still save a significant amount of money (often $100/month or more) by becoming a cord cutter and still enjoy all of your favorite shows.
Here are five tricks from your fellow cord-cutters that’ll help you maximize your cord cutting savings...
Continue Reading...Why did you cut the cord? How much money are you saving each month?I’ve been a customer of all of the major cable/satellite providers. Over and over again I was duped by their introductory pricing only to see my bills skyrocket to close to $100 per month for pretty basic TV services. For 5 years prior to cutting the cord, I had annual negotiations with my satellite provider to try to get my monthly costs down again. It became a huge pain to make those calls and still end up with minimal savings. When a friend of mine talked about how his family had moved to an HDTV antenna and cut the cord, I immediately began to plan my escape from pay TV. After installing everything, I'm saving about $65 per month and I still get to watch everything I did before I switched. I should've done this years ago.
Our friends Sling TV launched their popular TV streaming service in February. While a lot of cord cutters have been enjoying watching channels like ESPN and HGTV without a cable subscription, many have been wishing for a way to record live content from Sling TV and watch it later since a portion of their content does not offer an on-demand option. Many people have asked if they can use Tablo to record content from Sling TV, Netflix and other streaming services.
One of the ways cable companies are combatting the cord-cutting movement is by instituting bandwidth data caps (or finally enforcing caps) on internet packages. Potential cord-cutters have been warned that moving from a cable package to obtaining all video entertainment by downloading video or through streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu and Sling TV will be just as expensive, if not more, due to potential bandwidth overages.
Despite this propaganda, it’s totally possible to cut the cord on expensive cable TV contracts even if you have an internet data cap.

There’s been Sling TV, CBS All Access, HBO Now and Playstation Vue. NBC is also rumored to be planning a comedy-focused streaming service and others are saying Apple is planning a service including content from both broadcast and cable channels.
There’s never been more choice for consumers which is great news. However, some news reports have been focusing on how adding these services to get the equivalent of cable isn't really a good bargain...

There was a posting on a friend’s facebook page, that she had done away with her cable TV and replaced it with Roku, due to poor customer support from her cable provider. I too had frustration and angst when dealing with this same provider.
My interest was piqued by this Roku device that she was using to replace cable TV, so my sweetie Paul and I started our cord cutting home project.
