How I Cut the Cord with Tablo – By Ross, the Escaping from Pay TV Cord Cutter

Why did you cut the cord? How much money are you saving each month?
I’ve been a customer of all of the major cable/satellite providers. Over and over again I was duped by their introductory pricing only to see my bills skyrocket to close to $100 per month for pretty basic TV services. For 5 years prior to cutting the cord, I had annual negotiations with my satellite provider to try to get my monthly costs down again. It became a huge pain to make those calls and still end up with minimal savings. When a friend of mine talked about how his family had moved to an HDTV antenna and cut the cord, I immediately began to plan my escape from pay TV. After installing everything, I'm saving about $65 per month and I still get to watch everything I did before I switched. I should've done this years ago.

Cord Cutting with a Data Cap: It Is Possible

One of the ways cable companies are combatting the cord-cutting movement is by instituting bandwidth data caps (or finally enforcing caps) on internet packages. Potential cord-cutters have been warned that moving from a cable package to obtaining all video entertainment by downloading video or through streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu and Sling TV will be just as expensive, if not more, due to potential bandwidth overages.

Despite this propaganda, it’s totally possible to cut the cord on expensive cable TV contracts even if you have an internet data cap.

How I Cut the Cord with Tablo - by Tim & Ian 'The Rogers Rebuffing Cord Cutters'

Why did you cut the cord? How much money are you saving each month?

We were, like so many others, numb to the high-cost of (popular Canadian provider) Rogers Cable service for many, many years. We were afraid to ‘cut the cord’, thinking that the high cost of cable was the only way to get good programing and HD content. After a truly horrible customer service incident in November 2013 we decided to cancel our Rogers service. We installed a roof mount HD antenna but still hadn’t found a reliable OTA DVR solution. Shortly thereafter Tablo was introduced to the market. Our savings for cutting the cord is $65.83 per month ($790 per year).

How I Cut the Cord with Tablo - by Michelle 'The Cord Cutting Baby Boomer'

Why did you cut the cord? How much money are you saving each month?

I cut the cord due to the ever-increasing costs and horrible customer service with cable. I’m saving around $100 a month now!

What do you get with an HDTV antenna that you couldn’t get another way?
All the channels I get from my antenna are in HD. Even when I was paying over $160 per month for cable I had zero premium channels and zero HD. That cost was for basic cable only which is absurd!

Tablo OTA DVR vs. Cable DVR - How Much Can I Expect to Save by Cutting the Cord?

In a recent survey, 40% of Tablo users said that saving money was their primary reason for cutting the cord on cable. (The second most popular reason was that cable programming wasn’t worth the cost…)

Given the rising costs of maintaining access to those 300+ channels of reality shows and speciality programs you likely never watch, it’s not surprising people are looking for alternatives to cable TV. The average cost of a mid-range cable TV package is between $70-$100 a month. And that’s just for content, not the rental of hardware or extra fees your provider might charge.

Given that 47 of the top 50 shows are available via Over-the-Air broadcast networks, the cost vs. benefit analysis just doesn’t add up for most viewers.

Cable Companies Running Scared, Warning of Mutant Bunny Attacks

Technology is making cord-cutting easier which is making cable companies nervous. So much so that they likely spent a lot of money to create and circulate a series of web ads featuring seemingly stupid people in completely implausible situations with the goal of scaring current or potential cord-cutters into maintaining their service.
