How I Cut the Cord with Tablo - by Art ‘The Data Consumption Detective’

Tablo Owner Art from Joliet, ILWhy did you cut the cord and how much money are you saving each month?
I initially ‘shaved’ the cord 2 years ago for savings.

We were paying nearly $200/month with Comcast so we switched to DirectTV. As always after the initial 6-12 month ‘honeymoon’ period the price would skyrocket again, then we’d switch to Comcast again. We got tired of the endless calling and begging.

Technology made cutting cable more attractive. As of now we pay $61/month for 50Mbps Internet. That’s it.

Now Available: Tablo Web Apps for Smartphones

Just over a year ago, we were ramping up to introduce Tablo to the world. We had a product name, a beta-ready product and a handful of assumptions about how people would use it. Back then, we guessed most users would watch Tablo content on tablets and on TVs via Roku or Apple TV... (And eventually this thing called Chromecast that was brand spankin' new...) We also made a web app to be used on computers.

But we never really thought people would regularly use their smartphone to watch TV programs from their Tablo and figured the web app would work quite well for most smartphone users.

Tablo OTA DVR vs. Cable DVR - How Much Can I Expect to Save by Cutting the Cord?

In a recent survey, 40% of Tablo users said that saving money was their primary reason for cutting the cord on cable. (The second most popular reason was that cable programming wasn’t worth the cost…)

Given the rising costs of maintaining access to those 300+ channels of reality shows and speciality programs you likely never watch, it’s not surprising people are looking for alternatives to cable TV. The average cost of a mid-range cable TV package is between $70-$100 a month. And that’s just for content, not the rental of hardware or extra fees your provider might charge.

Given that 47 of the top 50 shows are available via Over-the-Air broadcast networks, the cost vs. benefit analysis just doesn’t add up for most viewers.

The Devil’s in the Details: Taking a Look at Total Cost of Ownership

Cutting the cord isn’t just about watching what you want, when you want on whatever device you want, it’s also about reducing the amount of money you spend each month on entertainment. Most of us who’ve joined the cord cutting revolution did so out of frustration for paying on average $85 per month for cable or satellite subscriptions. This is why doing the math on total cost of ownership (TCO) on your cord-cutting setup is critical to make sure ditching cable will get you the savings you’re looking for over the long term. As they say, the devil's in the details.
